Discussion
Looking at the pictograms just intended to indicate the possibility of playing the strategy board game chess, one will notice that some of them just display a single chess piece. Besides renderings showing side views of chess pieces we also added symbols intended to represent chess pieces according to chess conventions used to record chess moves, specified as Figurine Algebraic Notation (FAN). A few standard sets of chess pieces with king, queen, rook, bishop, knight, and pawn in white and black variants also found in various fonts according to Unicode specifications are part of the collection above. Searching the internet results in a much wider range of renderings of chess pieces.

Recommendations
Due to the fact that no data concerning comprehensibility of any pictogram variant is available, we recommend to conduct research using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure for eliminating poor variants and identifying the best of the set available, followed by a Comprehension Test. These studies should deliver useful data for recommending one or several pictograms. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories of the Comprehension Test should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs. Also information concerning knowledge about this kind of activity should be collected at the end of the test, as the degree of familiarity with the referent examined may significant impact on the validity of the data collected. Such detailed data should also provide information, which specific chess piece could be the best representation for chess in general.
