Discussion

The collection above already illustrates that there are two basic types of personal watercrafts: saddle jets and stand-up jets. Besides this general difference all pictograms show a side view of a person riding a small jet-drive boat.

In our research we discovered that there is only very limited test data available for the referent Jet Skiing:

Fiori (2008) examined a map symbol showing a side view of a human figure riding a saddle jet with water shown as two wavy lines, similar to the map symbol labeled as Fiori R in the table above, using a Comprehension Test conducted in Brazil. 74.4 % of the responses in this study were classified as correct, indicating that the message intended was understood well enough according to ISO conventions. Answers reported were for example Boat, Motor Boat, Speedboat Racing, but no information about response class assignments or categorization is available.

Recommendations

Due to the fact that data from research is insufficient, we recommend to start testing using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure for eliminating poor variants and identifying the best of the set available, followed by a Comprehension Test. These studies should deliver useful data for recommending the best pictogram. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories of the Comprehension Test should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs. A clear differentiation from Motor Boating is seen as relevant. Also information concerning knowledge about this kind of activity should be collected at the end of the test, as the degree of familiarity with the subject examined has a significant impact on the validity of the data collected.
