Discussion

The image contents of the graphical symbols in the collection above vary in correspondence to the games typically played in casinos. No single visual stereotype can be identified.

In our research we discovered that existing test data on pictograms for indicating the location of a casino and to signify the activity of gambling is very limited:

Neves (2012) examined the symbol for the suit of Clubs shown in the table above (labeled GSR Portugal) on basis of the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure, where it reached a mean value of 75.9, indicating this symbol probably could be understood well enough.

Zwaga & Poppinga examined a pictogram that was designed for Schiphol Airport, labeled as Schiphol above. In this study 89.5 % of the respondents - mostly persons with higher education - provided correct answers for this variant showing two human figures behind a roulette wheel.

No information is available about the comprehensibility of any other pictogram variants and misinterpretations or confusions to be expected.

Recommendations

Due to the limited data available we recommend conducting an exact analysis of the communication needs, collecting or designing further pictogram variants, and testing these graphical symbols using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure and Comprehension Tests to obtain data for recommending the best suited pictogram.
