Discussion

In our research we found only a small number of variants to indicate the availability of sleigh rides. Furthermore there is only very limited test data available:

Gehringer (1976) examined the three pictogram variants labeled 1) to 3) for the referent Horse-drawn Sleigh in an Appropriateness Ranking Test. The numbers 1) to 3) represent the final rank order of the symbols tested.

In a later Comprehension Test conducted in Austria (Brugger, 1983) the pictogram marked with *, a variant designed on basis of the test results mentioned before, was examined: 72 % of the responses were Sleigh, Sleigh Ride, Sleigh Rental or Horse-drawn Sleigh Ride. 6 % of the answers were Carriage or Carriage Ride and another 6 % answered Tobogganing.

Recommendations

ÖNORM A 3011 Public Information Symbol No 99: Sleigh (Pferdeschlitten)

Based on test results available and our own considerations we recommend using a pictogram like public information symbol No 99 from ÖNORM A 3011 part 4. This pictogram also offers a clear differentiation from Tobogganing.
